Sclerotherapy and Foam Sclerotherapy with Marbella Veins

Sclerotherapy treatment is used mainly for the elimination of small varicose veins or spider veins and is performed by injecting an irritant solution (sclerosant) directly into the spider and small varicose veins themselves. The irritant damages the vein walls causing them to swell, adhere and seal shut. The vein then slowly turns into scar tissue and gradually disappears over a period of weeks.

In some cases it may be appropriate to use foam sclerotherapy. This technique is similar to simple sclerotherapy, however is reserved for larger veins. The sclerosant liquid is mixed with air and made into a foam which is injected under ultrasound control. The foam enables the surgeon to treat larger veins without the need for surgery. There is a limit to the size of veins that can be treated using this technique.

Sclerotherapy and foam sclerotherapy are generally performed in the doctor's office and takes about 30 minutes to complete. The techniques are considered highly effective when properly done, although the same vein may require multiple injections and repeat treatments over time. The treatment can be slightly uncomfortable and occasionally patients experience a burning or stinging sensation, but the discomfort usually passes fairly quickly. Side affects are generally mild and temporary, and can include skin sores, superficial phlebitis, bruises and discoloration around the treatment site.
